Case Studies
Original business and public policy case studies are in development that can be added into existing business and public policy coursework, such as non-market strategy, business ethics, and legal or regulatory strategy classes.
This case study highlights how the video game industry came together to create the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) in response to government threats of regulation over violent game content. It’s a landmark example of how industry-led self-regulation can preserve creative freedom while addressing public concern and political pressure.
Companies are increasingly turning to voluntary, market-driven solutions to address climate concerns. This case study examines McDonald’s longstanding partnership with the Environmental Defense Fund and their efforts to advance more sustainable beef production through initiatives like regenerative grazing and explores the opportunities and limits of self-regulation in balancing environmental goals, business interests, and public expectations.
This case study provides a detailed overview of the direct selling industry's regulatory environment, focusing on the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) scrutiny of multi-level marketing (MLM) practices, the industry's self-regulatory efforts, and the landmark legal case involving Neora, LLC. It traces the historical development of direct selling and MLM models, discusses ethical challenges and regulatory responses, and highlights the establishment and role of the Direct Selling Self-Regulatory Council (DSSRC) in industry oversight.
